Frequently Asked Questions

Learn more about how CarePriceGuide works and how to use our data.

Where does this price data come from?
We extract pricing data directly from the machine-readable files (MRF) that hospitals are legally required to publish under federal price transparency laws. We clean, standardize, and organize this data to make it searchable for patients.
Is the listed 'Cash Price' exactly what I will pay?
Not necessarily. The prices shown are estimates for the procedure itself. The final bill may vary based on complications, additional tests required during the visit, doctor's fees, or specific hospital policies. Always call the hospital to get a binding quote before your appointment.
Do I need insurance to get these prices?
No. The 'Cash Price' (or Self-Pay Price) is specifically for patients who are paying out-of-pocket without using insurance. If you use insurance, your negotiated rate may be different (and sometimes higher or lower) than the cash price.
Why can't I find a specific procedure?
Not all hospitals list prices for every procedure code. Additionally, hospitals often use different descriptions for the same service. Try searching by the 5-digit CPT code (e.g., 73721) for the best results.
How often is the data updated?
We aim to update our database quarterly. However, hospitals may update their pricing files at any time. We recommend verifying the date of the pricing file with the hospital directly.
